The Toshiba Satellite L745-S4210 ($639.99 list, at Best Buy) is the kind of back to school laptop parents wouldn't mind buying for their kids, because it's practical and unpretentious. And by unpretentious, I mean it comes off a little bland and thick compared to its peers. But what it lacks in flare it makes up for with an up-to-date processor, great battery life, and affordable pricing. Students, though, would rather sink their teeth into something that'll impress on the outside and in.

Design
Toshiba employed the right materials on the cover, using a brushed aluminum finish with a navy blue tint. Anything attractive about its metallic top, however, is undone by its overly thick frame. It measures 1.3 inches thick, which is much bulkier than the HP Pavilion dm4-1265dx ($649.99, 4 stars) (1-inch thick) and even larger budget laptops like the 15-inch HP Pavilion dv6-6013cl ($649.99 list, 4.5 stars) and Acer Aspire AS5742-6811 ($699.99 list, 4 stars). Despite its bulk, the L745-S4210 4.5 pound frame is only a smidge heavier than HP dm4-1265dx (4.4 pounds).
The 14-inch widescreen is large enough so that a user can multitask with two applications at a time. It is one size bigger than the 13-inch screens found in the Apple MacBook (Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz) ($999 direct, 3.5 stars) and HP Pavilion dm3t ($625 direct, 4 stars). The full-size keyboard is easy on the fingers so that those with sensitive fingers aren't tapping on a hard surface. Users that aren't fans of chiclet-style keys will appreciate the interconnecting keys on this keyboard. Features
Though not much to get excited about, the L745-S4210 has all the essential features that an average user would need. This includes three USB 2.0 ports, one of which offers Sleep and Charge, a feature that let's you charge your phone or music player when the laptop is turned off. Performance
For the amount of money spent, the components won't disappoint. The laptop's Intel Core i3-2310M CPU is based on Sandy Bridge architecture—the latest and greatest from Intel. That and 4GB of memory have more processing power than most students know what to do with, unless he or she is an avid gamer or aspiring graphics designer (The L745-S4210 uses integrated graphics only). It finished Handbrake, a video transcoding test, in 3 minutes 1 second, which fell shy of the Acer AS5742-6811 and HP dm4-1265dx, with their faster Core i5 processors. This laptop can aptly handle a full-blown version of Adobe's Photoshop suite, as evidenced by its score on Photoshop (6:35), although the HP dm4 (4:55) and HP dv6-6013cl (5:48) tallied better results.
Long battery life is what distinguished the L745-S4210 from the other budget laptops. It drained its 48WH battery in 6 hours 37 minutes, edging out the HP dm4-1265dx (6:25) and surpassing the HP dv6-6013cl (5:17) by more than an hour. Without a doubt, it's more than enough to juice to last through a full day of classes on a single charge.
The Toshiba Satellite L745-S4210 is compact, battery efficient, and priced so that parents have enough money left over for other school-related necessities.
